MY style story….

Age 4, My pajamas had a hat!

Since a long as I could remember I have loved personal style.  By the time I could talk I was dressing myself.  My mom always allowed me to wear whatever I wanted, and let me tell you I DID!  I love to be unpredictable with my fashion.  The more color, the better.  As a girl my fashion idols were Pippi Longstocking & Cyndi Lauper.  Through my teen years, Madonna & these days combine those with Bjork, Alexander Mcqueen & Rodarte.   By the time I hit 13 I shed my tomboy image & started obsessing over the fashion layouts in every magazine.  That obsession continues today with POP, Z!nk, Another Magazine, S, Nylon…to name a few.  My mom taught me to be myself & never worry about what others thought.  Through countless years of teasing, I never conformed my personal fashion style. Of course it has changed over the years , as it should, however I really wanted to share my personal style journey with you and felt that pictures were the best way to do so.   My hair & weight was ever changing, however through out my 20’s I kept my hair longer at the request of a husband.  Never again!  By 30, we divorced, I opened p!ay hair lounge & TURNED MY VOLUME UP!  At age 34, I have never felt as comfortable in my own skin.  I love my short colorful hair and wear whatever I WANT.  I do not dress for the comfort of others. I cant help but stand out & I accept that full on.  Love my style or not, I DO and at the end of the day, that is all that ever should matter. I hope that with my guts to share these amazingly hilarious personal pics with you, you are inspired to revisit your style history!  Please comment below & visit my to keep up with me and my next adventure!   :) Brig Van Osten

I think you’re great. It’s fun being different and even better when you’re able to laugh at yourself and know when you’re better than someone else. You don’t have to parade around showing it but you know it inside! I wanna facebook you but can’t find you, help a fan out? :D

It’s so funny that I found your blog and saw this post because I was just thinking about my crazy style over the years and wondering If I could come up with some pictures to do a post just like this. This makes me want to look for them. For my first hair competition (while in beauty school in 1999) I wore red vinyl pants, it’s so funny that you were wearing vinyl too! Oh hairdressers, we are so crazy! I love you on shear genius, BTW. You have the best personal style on there, and I think that the judges just don’t understand your work most of the time!

Brig! Thanks for being a real person. I loved watching you conduct yourself with such grace and style throughout this season. (especially when Jenine and Matthew were acting like small children). I rarely ever get into TV show or the people on them, but you are very inspiring! Thanks!!

I think it’s wonderful that you’ve put these pictures up and shown your style evolution. Brilliant! I also love that you look younger now than you did when you were 26! Thanks for your lovely blog. Cheers – LA

I came upon Shear Genius by chance of channel surfing. I saw the competitors and initially had no favorite. When I saw at least two of the competitors bashing Brig, I listened to your story and said to myself: “Oh s***, she went through the same crap I did in high schol”. That got my emotional vote, but you still had to prove to me your prowess. When you went with the “Space-Age” ultra-high narrow silver beehive hairstyle with the model, I was saying “Oh Brig, you’re trying to hit a home run, when you should be trying for a double at best (baseball-speak). A} I’m sorry I didn’t trust your gamble and B} I was so glad that the judges liked your risk-taking. In closing, I was SO GLAD you won the competition, and I hope you go VERY FAR in your career!

    xoxo Greg
