The hair has left the girl…..

I’ve been part of the professional beauty industry for 16 years.  I have had great pleasures of doing incredible hair on many beautiful & confident women.   This post is about one of them.  I met Kelly when I was a guest artist for ISO Haircare.  I was at a model casting in 2000, choosing models, when she caught my eye.  Kelly was just looking for an adventure and some nice hair.  We instantly connected and following the show, she became a client.  Over the years her fearlessness to try drastic new haircuts & color has inspired many around her.
A few years ago she moved about 9 hours away from my shears & I.  This didn’t stop her loyalty.  She refuses to put her hair in anyone else’s hands. kw 4-2_2

Still humbled by her presence every 6-8 months, Kelly arrives to p!ay with VERY grown out roots and hair begging to be cut.  She leaves just a couple hours later with whatever brilliance SHE usually suggests.  I always have great ideas for my clients, however Kelly is visually blessed with the ability to choose looks, usually celebrity inspired, that suit her well.   Kate Moss, Gweneth Paltrow, Edie Sedgwick & Mia Farrow….
Earlier this year she e-mailed me and requested a 60’s cool, Edie chop & I was definitely down for the look.  I decided to film & have a photographer, Todd Jones, capture the transformation. Celebrity make-up artist, Laci Hill, joined us.  I just knew it was gonna kick ass.  KICK ASS it did & you get to watch it go down.  Please enjoy.

My most impactful makeover ever!

Brig's Mom, Ingrid 1965

Mom- 1965

The most impactful makeover I’ve ever done was on Sunday April 10th, 2011.  Life happens.  Sometimes great and sometimes we are faced with HUGE personal challenges. My mom, Ingrid, is my hero.  She was a unbelievable role model as I grew up.  She never told me I couldn’t, can’t or wouldn’t.  She was hard working,  extremely friendly & generous.  I can’t think of one person that didn’t love her. She owned her own clothing business.  On the weekends she set up a booth at local craft shows and sold “Ingrid’s Designs from the Heart”.  She also taught aerobics classes 3 days a week at the Park & Rec building down the street from our home to local moms trying to drop the “baby weight”.   She had diehard followers.   I remember her 80’s style- leotard, headband & short hair in 1985.  It wasn’t until about 7 years ago that I found old pictures and thoroughly appreciated her 60’s fabulousness.  Beehives as high as the sky. Incredible.
I opened p!ay hair lounge in July 2006.  My 65 year old mom was soooo excited & proud.  We talked almost everyday.        Only 3 months into my new venture, September 30, 2006, marked a very dark day.  She had a brain aneurysm.  She narrowly survived.  Her life and mine,  changed dramatically.  Her right side of her body was lifeless, putting her in a wheelchair & her speech and awareness was almost non-existant.
At the end of this January,  she became very ill & was hospitalized again.  She fought for her life against aspirational pneumonia for over 5 weeks in ICU before becoming somewhat stable.  A tracheotomy was added in her neck to help her breathe.  Needless to say, the last 3 months my mom has been away from her home have been extremely challenging for my family.  Thanks to the amazing support of p!ay hair lounge, my boyfriend Todd & cheeseburgers, I’m dealing.

burgerI am fortunate to live nearby.  My mom is at a sub-acute care rehab in between the salon & my home.  I go to hang with her, before & after work and on my days off.
Two weeks ago I was able to bring in my favorite acupuncturist, Lin Lin of Yin Yang Acupuncture.  After the first treatment my mom was able to her right arm & leg for the first time since her aneurysm.  So far, it has been 5 treatments & she is beginning to comprehend life a bit more, even shocking the nurses by saying a few words.  I decided that it was time to catch her hair up with the rest of her recovery.  It was overgrown, gray and mucky.  My mom always had short uber blonde hair.  In the recent years, her health challenges made other care a priority.
NOW, with the recent upturns, it was the time for her makeover!

Mom BEFORE

Mom- BEFORE

I arrived at the care center at 8:30a.m. on Sunday and set up in the “beauty salon”.  A shampoo sink & mirror in an “office”.  File folders, stapler, desk, phone, etc. You know, office.  Before I set up I realized I forgot to pack a tint brush.  Fortunately for the “activities room”, I was able to secure a paint brush to aid me in applying my mom’s color.   I unwound my mom’s messy bun and brushed it out.  She scowled at me in the mirror and I know why.  It was gray.  GRAY GRAY GRAY! Eeeek eeek eek.  NOT ok.  Only some remaining “kinda” blonde hung on the ends.  I got out my shears and dry cut her hair.  I was challenged by the oxygen tube wrapped around her ears and by the high back of the wheelchair.   I chose some upbeat tunes using my phone and Pandora,  slid the wastebasket up to the back of the wheelchair and began to snip away.  My mom started smiling and I could feel her relief.  Optimistic that she would respond well to her new hair, I kept snipping just trusting my gut.  Once I was finished with the cut, she smiled and answered “yeah” when I asked if she liked it. Phew.

Paint brush!

Next I highlighted her with a creamy blonde color and my “paintbrush”.   Now for the fun part.  Have you ever shampooed a client in a wheelchair? I think I did during beauty school, but those days are 15 years behind me.  The shampoo bowl was mounted too high.  There was a weird contraption that Velcrod around her neck and dropped UPWARD into the sink. Yes, UPWARD.   I knew there was going to be a problem.   Good thing my mom was a good sport and my ego is small.  I completely SOAKED her.  “Would you like a shower with your shampoo today?” Probably not going to be a hot new salon service.  I changed her shirt, blew out her hair and just when I went to show her the results, she was asleep.  Fast, fast asleep.  So the question that came to my mind was “Is a sleeping client a happy one?” I didn’t get my answer, but tears did come to my dad’s eyes when he arrived a few minutes later, because for once in the last 4 1/2 years she looked like the healthy, young Ingrid we all love.

Dear Brig….

Wanted to share this Facebook conversation in hopes to help others solve a similar hair dilemma!
Between Briana Diane Villate(Florida) & I.

Hi Brig :) I was wondering if you could help me with an issue I’m having with my hair. So my hair is curly but I roller set it and then blow it out so I could be straight and look healthy, so my problem is that on my side part my hair stands straight up!! No matter what I do those little hairs stick up!! I’ve tried Argan Oil, a little Beeswax, hairspray… And well those products either leave my hair oily or greasy or the hairspray leaves it really hard and stiff. I wish I could send you a pic so you could get a better idea but I didn’t want to post one on your page :) So anyways if you could give me some ideas of technique or product so that those hairs could just sit an lay flat I would really appreciate it. I look like a crazy the first day like I stuck my finger in a light socket and the next day not so bad. LoL Thank you so much for taking the time to read my message and help me!
With much love and respect,
Briana

Hi Briana!
The little hairs are probably “new growth”. Are they pointed on the end? If they are blunt, they are breakage. The good news is if it is new growth, it will start to blend in once it gets a bit longer, about 3-4 months. 1/2″ approximate growth per month. NOW the solution I recommend is spraying a firm hold hairspray onto the palm of your hand & pressing those hairs down. This way you only get the hairspray where you need it. I’d used Holding Spray from Bumble and bumble. Good luck! let me know if this helps. :) Brig
*P.s.- Try parting on the other side.

Hi Brig :) yes you were right they are new growth hairs, so I took your advice and put alittle hairspray in my hands and smoothed them down and it worked like a charm!!!! Thank you sooooo very much, now I’m not looking like a crazy with little freezes sticking up :P The bumble and bumble spray is awesome. You are the best thank you again :) Briana

SUCCESS!

Brig on MODERN SALON TV

I recently emceed and judged HAIR WARS in Las Vegas.  It was held at the rad Palms Hotel.  I had a blast!  5 semi-finalists/salons showed models inspired by the LADY GAGA theme.  They created intricate head to toe looks.  I was blown away.  Serious, serious cool stuff!  More bling than a Jay-Z’s New Years Eve party. Check out how it went down & who ended up on top with a HUGE well deserved win!

#1 Dry Hair Causing Culprit is……

Tap water.  Yes, that simple.  Tap water.  You know, the water you bathe in.  It comes streaming innocently out of your shower head and if you are one of a HIGH percentage of people, your water is “hard”.

This definition comes from Hardwater.org:
Water described as “hard” is high in dissolved minerals, specifically calcium and magnesium. Hard water is not a health risk, but a nuisance because of mineral buildup on fixtures and poor soap and/or detergent performance.
Let me translate this in hair speak-

Your hair, especially but not limited to long, will absorb these add-ins and become mucky & dull .  It will feel like hay, take FOREVER to dry & when wet, often feel “waxy”.  You may think you need to cut off A LOT, but this is not always the case.  Your stylist, if knowledgeable with this situation, can remove the build up by using a clarifying treatment.  Beware of stylists who right away tell you that 1 foot needs to be chopped. You might just need help in your “water department”.
If you have a heavy build up, it may take 2 or 3 treatments.   Beware- These treatments can affect your artificial hair color.  Ask your stylist about this.  At home you can try using a clarifying shampoo such as Bumble & bumble Sunday Shampoo.
If you are colored blonde, you will notice your hair looks bright when you leave the salon and then gets dull & rusty within a few weeks.    Reds tend to “brown out”.  Brunettes are the most difficult to detect to the eye. Usually easier felt than seen and take FOREVER to blow dry!
Okay, now your EASY solution- Attach a filter to your existing shower head. Yes, you can still have the same water pressure and keep your rainhead shower fixture while dramatically increasing the health of your hair (& skin)!

The chrome cylinder near the wall is the filter

The chrome cylinder near the wall is the filter

I recommend this one from Spriteshowers.com

filter 1

I bought mine at Lowe’s for approximately $20.  ONLY $20!!

They recommend changing the cartridge inside the filter every 6 months, I recommend every 3-4 months.
Here are the easy steps I recommend.

  1. Call your water company and ask if your home receives “hard water”. (Probably does)
  2. Buy shower filter.  Order online here!
  3. Install shower filter yourself or hire a hot plummer to install for you (Look what came up when I searched “hot plummer” click here. Hilarious!
  4. Call your stylist and set up an appointment to “clarify” the “hard water build-up” from your hair.

Enjoy NOTICEABLY healthier hair.

& now for the breakdown-

Eeek. Here is the breakdown...

BTW- Very awesome customer service!  @ p!ay hair lounge we will have Sprite Showers brochures on hand and are recommending all of our clients purchase one to help increase the overall health & appearance of their hair, skin & apparently lungs too.  Wow!  New year, new knowledge!
