Jessica Krewson, Owner of designKREW
At one time or another, all of us women have wanted to grow our hair long. Meet Jessica Krewson, owner of designKREW, my client & long haired friend. Her hair used to be above her shoulders and together we grew it long and healthy. On her last visit to p!ay hair lounge we were reminiscing about the journey of her hair and how it went from short to long. Her hair is striking! We got to talking not only about what part I, as her hairstylist, had in that but also her role. We realized this was information that others would find useful. I hope you do.
Before I was a stylist, I always read the advice to get regular trims and my hair would grow faster. I never understood this logic. If it keeps getting cut, won’t it get shorter.I now know this advice is true.
Let me explain it easily:
Hair grows on average of 1/2 inch every four weeks. Not fast if you are wanting it a foot longer. You can help encourage quicker growth by being sure you have a balanced diet, taking a multi-vitamin & using quality professional products to maintain its health.
Hair that is not regularly trimmed, splits on its ends. When these ends are not cut off in a timely manner, they split higher up the hair shaft breaking off somewhere in the middle. Enough of this cycle and you will notice the overall thickness of the bottom perimeter of your hair starts to look see thru. Or worse, starts to form the dreaded V and actually gets shorter.
Follow these steps to long locks:
- Be sure your hairstylist understands that you want to grow your hair long.
- Listen to your hairstylist. You might need to cut off some length to rid your hair of unhealthy ends in order for it to grow longer at the beginning of this venture.
- Go for regular trims approx every 10 weeks to eliminate any new splits. These trims should only be about 1/4″ off the ends.
- Take care of your hair at home by using quality products such as Bumble & bumble to add plenty of moisture and prevent heat styling damage.
- Be realistic and know it will take patience, but hair does grow.
Have a goal length in mind, but if as it grows it doesn’t look right on you, abandon the plan and try something different.
