Dear Brig,

"Help! I am ready to shave my head"

Dear Brig,

Help! My hair is curly in the back and right side, and flat & frizzy on the left side. I use the cheapie shampoo (i think suave?) which is suspect is part of the problem, but I don’t know what to get of the good stuff. My hair isn’t permed, colored or anything else, and I never use a blow dryer. I’d like it to be curly all around my head — not just 2/3 of it! What should I be doing differently? I’d like to stop putting it into a ponytail :( – Depressed Hair Girl

P.S. You can use my pic, but please mask my face.

Dear Depressed Hair Girl,

Hmmm..  I wonder if you sleep on your left side.   This could be causing the flat and frizzy situation…

Good news!  I can help you out.  The first thing I notice is that your haircut is lacking shape.  I recommend that you set up an appointment with a new stylist stat!   Choose a stylist who can give you a great “long layered razor cut”.  I know this sounds scary, but your hair is too heavy.  More than likely you have a lot more curl waiting to be set free. For tips on how to find a qualified stylist view my post titled New Years Hair Makeover.

Your new stylist should be able to show you some quick “you friendly” at home styling tricks.  You should have a good blow dryer and diffuser attachment.  It only takes about 10 minutes, and with the right products, can really pump up your curls.  A diffuser attachment softens the airflow from the dryer, diffusing it, and simulating your hair air drying.  The benefit to a diffifuser over air drying is that you can give your curls support while they dry.  When curls air dry, the weight of the water drops to the ends and weighs it down causing a uneven result.  You are right! Your cheapie shampoo is not helping.  Those cheap substitutes tend to over dry the hair with harsh cleansers and the conditioners weigh down the hair with a waxy build up that worsens over time from extended use.  Another culprit could be ”hard water” coming out of your faucet. (See post titled Hair Drying Dilemma from July 08.)

I am partial to a Bumble and bumble exclusive salon due to these two facts:

  1. -Bumble and bumble has created a brilliant line of products just for curly hair:  Bb. Curl Conscious  and you can view different recipe cards on the website.
  2.  -Bumble and bumble stylists are trained specifically with texturized haircuts and almost all weild a razor.

So here is your checklist:

  • Find a new stylist that specializes in razor cuts and working with curly hair.  Bring a picture of your dream hair.  It helps! If you don’t like bangs, be sure to disclose this info upfront before the hair starts flying.
  • Get a prescription from your new stylist on what products to use and how to use them including some styling tips.
  • Be sure you know how to reach your new stylist if you have ?’s before your next appt.
  • Buy a blow dryer with a diffuser attachment.  (Check out my last post, My Blow Dryer, My Hero)
  • Get creative.
  • Write me back with your results.
